Application of UAV lidar technology in forest resources inventory
The cover image shows the UAV light detection and ranging (lidar) data and its individual tree segmentation results of a forest in the Sierra
Nevada Mountains, California, USA. The UAV lidar data was collected by an eight-rotor UAV lidar system, developed by the team leading
by Prof. Qinghua Guo from Peking University. This UAV lidar system integrated a long-range laser scanner, two Global Navigation Satellite
System (GNSS) receivers, and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor, which provides a powerful tool for accurately capturing threedimensional (3D) structure of forests with a high level of details. Through a self-developed workflow consisted of point cloud filtering,
normalization, and individual tree segmentation, the UAV lidar data can be used to extract various forest structural attributes accurately
and efficiently, such as tree height, diameter at breast height, crown surface area, and crown volume. The strong capability of UAV lidar in
capturing 3D forest structural information and attributes makes it a promising tool for managing forest resources, assessing forest wildfire
damages, and understanding forest ecosystem processes.
